Why Customize Websites?
You aren't selling a bag of coffee—you're describing the experience of sipping a warm cup on a cold morning. In my WooConf 2017 keynote, I explored why website customization matters beyond aesthetics: it's about creating emotional connections and paths for visitors to fall in love with products. Drawing from James Baldwin's wisdom about making things better, here's Part 1 of our deep dive into custom web design philosophy.

Sketch, Shared Symbol Libraries, and Needmore
Sketch just convinced us to put a ring on it with one game-changing feature: shared libraries. Like CSS files for design, they let our whole team access symbols that update everywhere when changed—no hunt and peck, no copy and paste. Finally, a simple implementation that makes sense, unlike Adobe's limited approach. Shared symbol libraries are effectively style guides you can build with.

iPad Pro for Identity Design
Our studio upgraded to iPad Pro and Apple Pencil for each core team member, and it quickly became a freeing way to convey ideas fast. Using Adobe Draw for our Hither Coffee identity felt natural—like marker and paper—while aligning with our commitment to use less paper. The iPad Pro lets us keep a virtuous design cycle, making work easier to manipulate with less waste."

Summer Fridays
When asked about design inspiration, our answers surprised us: museums, long hikes, camping, boredom, wandering minds. These all require something precious—time. So we tried Summer Fridays, leaving at noon each Friday in July and August. The experiment taught us key lessons: owners must fully buy in, you can't cram 8 hours into 4, and always communicate schedule changes to clients.

Unpacking Coffee Rolls Out Season Two
Fifteen episodes into Unpacking Coffee Season Two, we've challenged ourselves with custom opening songs for each roaster, a new website, and exciting collaborations. We're covering La Marzocco Café's roasters in residence, deepening our partnership with Roast Magazine, and sourcing diverse roasters from fully Colombian Devoción to 100% direct trade Forty Weight. Plus, bonus interview extras because our chats are too good to waste.

The New New Needmore
Our new website puts client stories first with portfolio pieces that have their own colors and ombre backgrounds, instantly showing it's their story that matters most. We finally created focused landing pages explaining what we do—from websites and campaigns to branding and packaging—while showcasing our coffee industry experience and sprinkling in our playful personalities.

Bohemian Coffee Club
Coffee and creativity are as meaningful to us as the air we breathe, so working with Bohemian Coffee Club felt like coming home. We crafted an online coffee subscription specifically for creatives, handling everything from identity and illustration to website and packaging. A creative's dream conjured into reality—exactly the kind of project that reminds us why we got our start alongside artists and musicians over a decade ago.

Unpacking a Royal Holiday
Our first annual Unpacking Coffee holiday special became a thrilling journey from green beans to finished bag, benefiting Children's Cancer Association. We started with a gorgeous Ethiopia Wenago Zelelu Ararso Crown Jewel from Royal Coffee Importers, had it roasted by Roseline Coffee Roasters, then designed vintage-inspired packaging with custom illustrations fitting for the 60th Wedding Anniversary blend it was destined to grace."
