{"id":6714,"date":"2012-06-21T07:57:59","date_gmt":"2012-06-21T14:57:59","guid":{"rendered":"\/?p=6714"},"modified":"2020-08-26T10:07:01","modified_gmt":"2020-08-26T17:07:01","slug":"playstation-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/needmoredesigns.com\/playstation-3\/","title":{"rendered":"PlayStation 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ICloud\">iCloud<\/a><\/strong> and our <strong>AppleTV<\/strong>, I realized that we don&#8217;t really need to keep our Mac Mini around at home just as a media server. We could instead replace our DVD player and our Mini with a game system\u2014and get the benefits of having a game system as well. I may be a Serious Web Designer now, but growing up, I adored games. I also spent a year as a digital artist at a now-defunct game studio in Santa Cruz, so I have a deep appreciation for the craft that goes into a good game.<\/p>\n<p>We promptly went shopping and picked up an <strong>XBOX 360 with Kinect<\/strong>. I was very interested in this system, since it seemed to have a lot going for it that our little three-year-old would enjoy. However, I was soon completely let down by the device, and returned it within 24 hours, replacing it with a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PlayStation_3\">PlayStation 3<\/a> with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PlayStation_Move\">Move<\/a><\/strong>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6723 lazyload\" title=\"playstation-move-with-ps3\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/playstation-move-with-ps3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"342\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/needmoredesigns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/playstation-move-with-ps3.jpg 570w, https:\/\/needmoredesigns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/playstation-move-with-ps3-410x246.jpg 410w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here are my issues with the XBOX, all of which were remedied by the PlayStation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The XBOX had a miniscule hard drive, and a seriously small limit to its external storage (<em>16 gigabytes!<\/em>). So it wouldn&#8217;t really work as a media server. Our PS3, by comparison, has a 320 gigabyte drive, and can accept any properly-formatted USB drive as well.<\/li>\n<li>The unit is promoted as being a way to watch services like Amazon Prime, Netflix, and so forth\u2026 but what they don&#8217;t mention is that you have to pay Microsoft <em>$60 a year<\/em>! That&#8217;s not the case with my AppleTV, and it&#8217;s not the case with the PlayStation.<\/li>\n<li>The user interface is filled with ads. This isn&#8217;t a show-stopper, but I&#8217;ve built my &#8220;entertainment system&#8221; with the concept of zero ads in mind. I&#8217;m not about to change that now.<\/li>\n<li>The Kinect doesn&#8217;t really work that well. It&#8217;s a cool idea, and apparently a hot seller, but I was disappointed. It doesn&#8217;t really work for small kids, and when the room&#8217;s lighting wasn&#8217;t just right, it didn&#8217;t really work for me.<\/li>\n<li>Finally, I came to discover that most of the really interesting, nontraditional, &#8220;indie&#8221; games are PlayStation-exclusive. Games like <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/LittleBigPlanet_2\">LittleBigPlanet<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Journey_(2012_video_game)\">Journey<\/a> and many more. These kinds of games fascinate me.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So we&#8217;re already much happier with the PlayStation 3. I think we&#8217;ve made the right decision.
