Now, we\u2019ll be the first to admit that we\u2019ve never read one of his books, but he\u2019s an influence in popular culture that you just can\u2019t avoid, so it seemed like a great opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>The best part of the evening was listening to him tell stories about his own life. He\u2019s a funny guy, not afraid to swear and make fun of himself, and on stage he struck me as having as much in common with a comedian as a horror writer.<\/p>\n<p>In the second half of the evening, he took a stack of cards from the audience and proceeded to answer questions. One, however, was not a question, but a request to wish a happy birthday to a woman in the theater who was turning 50 on that day. Mr. King led the entire audience through a moving rendition of \u201cHappy Birthday,\u201d only to realize afterwards that he\u2019d read her name wrong.
