My del.icio.us bookmarks are a mess! No rhyme or reason to the tags – no overarching plan of organization here. I’ve got similar sounding tags like artist and artists; comedy and comics; shopping and ecommerce; webdesign, webdesigners and design. I cannot find a single entry to save my life here. It’s time to do some housecleaning before things get out of hand.
Enter Wired’s Tips from top taggers with the following advice for tagging bookmarks:
- Do not overlap tags with the same meaning (do not have web, webdev and development – pick one).
- Choose a core group of good tags that might even be used by others. Some good ones: photography, gadgets, linux, mac, osx, web, books, cognition, mind, life and writing.
- Have a couple tags for each post for drill down, but not too many!
On a side note, I was in the midst of evangalizing the amazing utility of del.icio.us to a designer yesterday. She seemed really jazzed – until I pulled up the website. The excitement died immediately. I looked over and realized – this page is not visually compelling in any way. Not a bit. And, that’s a shame, because it is quite useful.
