Optimizing for iPad Shoppers

Tablets are on a tear this year, as predicted. It seems like virtually everyone we know has one, and we’ve been testing every site we build on our iPads.

Tablets are great for online retail, and a big part of our planning process is ensuring that our designs don’t just look good on an iPad, but they work good too. That means testing that scrolling works as expected, tap areas are appropriately sized, things respond to common touch gestures as expected, and so on.

This report via GigaOm is a fascinating and fairly thorough survey showing that tables – iPads, specifically – are ideal for shopping online. This quote certainly caught our eye.

Heinemann thinks that tablets can do even better than PCs if websites start tailoring their experiences for them. Right now, most are still oriented toward a desktop experience. But there is still more optimization that can be done for tablets, including better touch navigation and bigger links.
