One of our goals for 2012, besides focusing in on web design, was to get out and meet people in Portland that are doing what they love as well. We’re personally committed to one good lunch chat a week, and one or both of us have talked trade with Lev of ThinkShout, with Nicole and Tyler at Factory North, Jennifer Armbrust of Armbrust & Co, blogging star Honey Kennedy, indie artist and creative Amy Ruppel, and more. We even made it out to Pattern People’s brilliant show at Stumptown, daughter in tow.
It’s pretty serious.
We’ve learned so much from talking to everyone this month. Here are some of the lessons learned.
- Focus on what you love.
- Do some work you are passionate about and have creative control with, even if it you don’t get paid.
- Keep learning.
- Find mentors and listen to them.
- There are two basic ways to grow a business like ours.
- Meeting fellow designers is fun.
