Apple Pay’s Hidden Win

Apple Pay is cool. No doubt about that. We’ve tried it several times, and nothing else comes close. But it’s more than just a cool way to check out at a store.

One of the features of Apple Pay that doesn’t necessarily occur to you at first is that, since it’s connected to a credit card, it’s able to notify you of transactions that take place on that card via a push notification, even if that transaction didn’t happen through your phone.

Most of the time these are not in any way surprising, or it just feels like a parlor trick. Like when you hand your card to the wait staff and you get a push notification that they ran the card before they come back to the table. It’s cool, but doesn’t do much for you.

However, the other day I was notified of a $29 payment to a service Needmore doesn’t use. We did use it at one point, but we stopped a long time ago. Not only were we still apparently getting billed monthly, but for some reason we weren’t getting emails! This is not good.

I contacted the vendor, and it turns out they’d been billing us without our knowledge for 10 months. Luckily, since they’re not Comcast, they were willing to not only fix the problem but refund us a total of $290, since it was obvious we hadn’t used the account at all in that time.

So yeah, Apple Pay is indeed cool, in more ways than you might initially realize. Give it a try, it could save you a bunch of money too.
