Venerable Group bringing Washington High School back to life

Washington High School in Southeast Portland, Oregon slated for retail and event space

Portland, Or – If you’ve driven down Stark in Portland in the last few years, you might have wondered to yourself, “What’s up with that old school?” It’s certainly a lovely building, but it’s been a while since it was a school!

Thanks to our friends at Venerable, that’s all about to change.

Few could disagree that this building is a true architectural gem. The high school’s primary, west-facing elevation offers an impressive expression of its Classical Revival style. A four-story central bay features three pairs of recessed entry doors at the ground-floor level with four monumental ionic columns above. From a distance, one can see the entry pavilion’s frieze that is inscribed with the words “Washington High School” and, if you look closely, you can see that the building’s cornice is punctuated by lion heads. Our restoration work will notably repair the large scar on the west elevation where a non-original sky bridge previously connected the building to another campus structure.

Because the building is so historic and impressive, our number one task was to bring its character front and center. That meant filling the tops of all pages with big, beautiful imagery. Everything about them is updateable by the client, of course. We also filled the site with character taken from the original blueprints.

The current goal of the Washington High School website is to show off the units available for lease and inform curious souls about building plans. As such, we designed a contact form with a prominent map and a leasing page that can accommodate any number of documents, as well as showcase building amenities with the aid of a conceptual sketch of renovations.

In late 2014, when renovations are scheduled to be completed. Washington High will be home to numerous concerts and events. These events will take place on the rooftop and the auditorium. When that time comes, the site will be ready with a custom-designed events calendar. Perhaps even better, these events will automatically populate on the homepage. A lovely feature to encourage people to see Washington High for themselves.

The website is real beauty, but most flattering, perhaps, was getting a postcard from the client, based on our design! Our ideas worked so well that they ended up using them for all of their print work, as well.
