Designing with the Future in Mind

We love our office. We really do. We spent so many years working out of the “home,” in makeshift offices, that it’s truly a treat to have a big, clean, quite place all to ourselves. Especially coming into the new year, it feels really good. And the design of the space is great!

But not perfect. One wall is made up of almost entirely clear plastic, with wood beams and slats on the outside.

I’m not sure if you can tell by these iPhone pictures (click for detail), but the clear plastic has gotten rather dirty. It was actually dirty when we moved in, since just putting it up is going to get it dirty!

Well that’s fine, it’s bound to get dirty over time. The question is, how on earth do you clean behind something like this?

Unfortunately, no-one here has an answer for that question. So the moral is, go ahead and design something beautiful, but be sure to think about how it’s actually going to be used by people, and maintained, in the future. It’s a designer’s responsibility!
