We at Needmore are big fans of Louis CK, and we were very excited to see that he had produced a live film and was selling it himself on his website, at buy.louisck.net.
However, being web designers, we were struck by something that he wrote in his statement:
The development of the website, which needed to be a very robust, reliable and carefully constructed website, was around $32,000. We worked for a number of weeks poring over the site to make sure every detail would give buyers a simple, optimal and humane experience for buying the video.
Really? $32,000? For this??
Now, I know a thing or two about web design. And I can tell you that most of our projects are more than two pages. I can also tell you that we think about things like not putting red text on a dark background, because it’s very difficult to read. For that price, we often build sites that integrate with real payment systems, enabling people to keep more of their money.
But this is a pretty simple site. It’s two pages with a PayPal button and a couple of social links. In all honesty, I can’t see this taking very long to build. It’s not even mobile-friendly! Try reading it on your phone!!!
I think our friend Louis got burned.
